Saving Money On Bridesmaid Expenses

Getting asked to serve as a bridesmaid at a friend or relative's wedding is an honor. A big, expensive honor. Some bridesmaids spend thousands of dollars on expenses!

The truth is, between travel and attire expenses and buying a gift, fulfilling your bridesmaids duties can really ring up the price tag if you're not careful. Luckily, there are ways to save and pinch pennies without lowering your standards - or compromising your dazzling bridesmaid glamour!

Travel Arrangements

It used to be that a bride paid her bridesmaids' travel and hotel expenses. Yeah, those were the days. But now with some wedding costs already hitting the six-digit mark, the wedding party is often expected to find their own way to the wedding.

Shop online, book early, and be ruthless in negotiating airfare and hotel expenses. See if the bride and groom have arranged transportation in the wedding city, and arrange to meet it there. Skip cabs by taking hotel shuttles. Room with another bridesmaid to split the hotel bill; the two of you can also save more money by doing each other's hair the day of the wedding.

The bridesmaid dress and other attire

The two biggest parts of your bridesmaids ensemble are the dress and shoes. You may have to have your shoes dyed to match the dress, too. Save money by shopping online for the particular dress you need, and ordering well in advance. You can also save by monitoring dressmakers and wholesalers inventory closeout sales. These are sometimes discreetly advertised, so you'll need to pay attention.

You can also order the shoes online and have them dyed before delivery.

The Rehearsal and Wedding Gifts

These gifts can be expensive if you get out of control with the shopping. Instead of buying two gifts, create one and buy the other. Shopping online saves money, but you need to order in time to have the gifts delivered. Creating your own gift saves money, too, but there's a time investment required.

Gift shopping requires skill and persistence. But before you start, narrow down your ideas to something that conveys the right sentiment at the price you're willing to pay. Knowing what you want in advance saves time and restricts you to a budget you're comfortable about. Finally, gift wrap the presents yourself to spare that expense, too.
