Algorfa is one of the Southern Costa Blanca's many citrus farming villages, lying in rich and fertile countryside in the Segura valley. Situated between the towns of Rojales and Almoradi, Algorfa has a large administrative area but is only a small village with a population of 2,914 (2006). Algorfa is a traditional Spanish village with a rich cultural heritage and its people have a warm, welcoming nature.

There appear to have been settlements in the region around Algorfa during the Neolithic Period (4,000 to 2,000 BC), some human remains and tools were discovered by a Jesuit archaeologist from Orihuela in 1903.

The municipality of Algorfa was originally founded in 1328 when Alfonso II granted a privilege which made Algorfa part of the kingdom of Valencia, the first village of Algorfa consisted of just fifteen homes housing fifteen families. This privilege stood until it was withdrawn by Felipe V after the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), it was later restored by Carlos IV by request of the Marquess of Algorfa at the end of the 18th Century.

The Algorfa of today is a peaceful and friendly village, centred around the pretty village square where many fiestas and celebrations take place. Located in the village square are the new Town Hall (built in 2004), the church and the police station (combined with the Town Hall) together with a number of bars and restaurants where visitors and villagers can enjoy a quiet drink and a tasty lunch. Even the centre of Algorfa is a tranquil place where visitors are always given a warm welcome.

Sunshine is the order of the day in Algorfa and its inhabitants can expect to see over 300 days of it during an average year. Rain is scarce and usually limited to the cooler winter months (the most common months for rain being February and November), and an average yearly temperature of about 19 degrees centigrade is normal.

Whilst on a visit to Algorfa you might also want to see some of the other attractions in the area - worth a look are the quaint 19th neo-gothic church (located on the road to Benejuzar), the extensive gardens at the Palace of the Marquis de Fontabla at nearby Jacarilla, the cave houses at Rojales and the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja (Natural Park of the salt lakes).

Algorfa also has its own busy market held on a Sunday and always worth a trip.

There are a variety of sports and leisure facilities available in and around Algorfa including the La Finca Golf Club - with its championship course set amongst natural surroundings, the recreation centre offering a wide range of facilities and there are some beautiful cycling and walking routes. An excellent range of water sports are enjoyed in the local coastal towns and there is a super Aqua Splash park at nearby Quesada. As well as La Finca Golf Club there are several other golf courses within easy reach of Algorfa, notably along the Orihuela Costa, where there are 3 golf course very close together.

There are no beaches in Algorfa, as it is an inland village, but just down the road at Guardamar del Segura you will find miles and miles of excellent sandy beaches together with some superb water sports facilities. The surrounding coastline is renowned for its crystal clear water and there are some wonderful spots for scuba diving and snorkelling.

The motto of Algorfa is "a place to live and to enjoy life" - it certainly live up to its motto, be sure to visit some time soon.

Algorfa lies just off the CV-91 road between Orihuela and the coastal town of Guardamar del Segura. It can also be easily reached from the N332 coast road and from the AP-7 motorway (junction 740). The nearest airports are at Alicante and Murcia (San Javier) both are about a thirty five minute drive away.
