There are many reasons behind restless sleep. Our bodies are easily agitated, especially during a time when complete and utter serenity is essential. So what are some of the reasons why we experience sleepless nights?
One reason behind a sleepless night is an overactive mind. Many of us go to bed with numerous thoughts and worries running through our minds. An overactive mind will surely make your sleep habits suffer. A part of being sleepy is not being alert, and when we are thinking or experiencing tension our body produces stress hormones that keep us awake. Another reason why some people can't sleep is because they disturb their internal clock on the weekends. Many of us stay out late on weekends and in turn sleep in late in the mornings. This cycle disrupts our weekly internal clock. So if at all possible, try to go to sleep and wake up around the same time all week long. Hormones are yet another reason behind sleepless nights. Fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone tend to keep women awake. This usually occurs pre-menstrual cycle or pre-menopause. Some of these hormonal imbalances may be temporary and other may require medicine. If you are having premenstrual cramps try taking a pain supplement and a hot shower right before bedtime.
Another reason behind poor sleep is a poor diet. Going to bed hungry will most likely cause you to awake in the middle of the night (that is if you are able to fall asleep in the first place). So try to maintain a healthy diet. Studies have also shown that people who are trying to lose weight may wake up more frequently during the middle of the night. So now that you know what factors can trigger a sleepless night, try to pinpoint what exactly is disturbing your sleep routine.
