Most people teach their kids the dangers of drugs and alcohol. However, not many parents teach their kids about the danger of indulging in sugary "foods" and drinks like ice cream, sodas, energy drinks, donuts and candy. They don't teach them that sugar can affect them physically in terrible ways. Many parents might not even realize that too much sugar affects their bodies and causes in so many ways; too much sugar affects your immune system, your eyesight, your skin, your bones - every part of your body.

Sugar also makes our kids addicts - sugar addicts. It will give them a high, but in an hour, when the sugar rush has worn off, their energy will be very low. That will cause them to crave more sugary foods and drinks to give them energy. Before you know it, they are in a vicious cycle; they have become sugar addicts and that leads to terrible consequences in their teenage and adult years. When kids start eating and drinking foods and beverages that are high in sugar starting at an early age, by the time they are teenagers they can have a lot of health problems such as obesity, tooth decay, weakened eyesight, premature aging, and gastrointestinal problems.

So, what is the solution? Should we have them consume drinks and food made with aspartame or other artificial sweeteners? There is been a lot of debate as to whether or not aspartame is safe for us and experts have come to the conclusion that it is. Here is an excellent link to read more about the facts and myths of aspartame: http://www.aspartame.org/.

Even though it is ok to give our kids foods and beverages with artificial sweeteners, it is best to have drink and eat things that are made with WHOLE FOODS and that are sweetened with blue agave or stevia. These are natural sweeteners that have a much lower glycemic level then sugar or even honey.

Help your kids, and yourself, to not become sugar addicts. Teach them the benefits to eat fruits and vegetables and to not be constantly eating and drinking foods and drinks that have high sugar content. Teach them that to have energy in their daily lives they do not need to rely on sugar. Help them to make the right choices early on; do that by word and example. By doing this, you will help save them from a myriad of health problems in the future, such as obesity, tooth decay, weakened eyesight, premature aging, and gastrointestinal problems.
