Dubai Holidays
Starting in the 80's and 90's and driven by the Emirates Airlines growth Dubai initially was a exotic destination suiting those adventurous holidaymakers who were searching for something different.
In the late 90's and Dubai started building up its 5 star hotel segment the momentum picked up significantly. With the construction of the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Burj Al Arab Dubai set itself at the top of the world stage by attracting the world's elite who are always searching for the next hot destination.
The momentum hasn't slowed as the initial investments from the Jumeirah Group have now been followed by some of the strongest international hotel brands looking to capitalize on one of the world's strongest hotel markets.
Although some see the regional market as offering strong competition for the Dubai Holiday market share we anticipate the regional players such as neighboring Emirates such as Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah as only offering a secondary extended vacation option for those choosing the Dubai Holiday destination. Regional players such as Qatar and Bahrain are also well beyond the development and brand of Dubai to make take any meaningful chunk of the Holiday market share for the region.
Dubai will now be forced to prove that it has a long-term sustainable plan to grow its tourist base from what has been traditionally its sun, sand and shopping mantra with a more diverse offering of conference, corporate and family options to compete on a global scale with the global leading destinations.
Dubai Holiday growth will predominantly occur in this diversification into other sectors such as Health and Financial tourism. Dubai Healthcare City and Dubai International Finance Centre are two big initiatives that epitomize this attempt at diversification and are more emblematic of Dubai's attempt to revolutionize its trading reliance and is more of a accidental tourism find than a core strategic intention.
