Defining music on hold in simple language is it is the music that takes effect when phone A is talking to phone B, and phone a places phone B on hold. Resources of music on hold make phone B to listen to music that is streamed from music on hold server. Definitions that follow provide important information for the discussion that follows. Firstly is the music on hold server. It is a software application that provides music on hold audio sources and connects music on hold audio source to a number of streams.

Second is the media resource group. It is a logical grouping of media servers. One can associate a media resource group with a geographical location or a site as desired. Also form media resource groups to control server usage or desired service type that is uni cast or multicast. The media resource group list is a list of companies that comprises prioritized media resource groups. The used application can select required media resources from among ones that are available according to the priority order that is defined in a media resource group list. An audio source identity is an identity number that represents an audio source in the music on hold server. This source of audio can be either a file on a disk or a fixed device from which a source stream obtains the streaming data. A single group can support up to fifty one audio source identity numbers that is from one to fifty one. Every source of audio can stream as uni cast and multicast mode, if required. Another term used in music on hold is holding party. We can define holding party as follows.

Like if in an active two-party call the party that initiates a hold action which can be either user hold or network hold like for example if party A is talking to party B, and party A presses the Hold soft key to initiate a hold action then party A is the holding party. A held party is one in an active, two-party call, the party that does not initiate a hold action but is involved. Example: if party A is talking to party B, and party A presses the Hold soft key to initiate a hold action, party B is the held party. There are certain rules that are followed for selection of audio source identity numbers. The rules say that the system administrator, not the end user can define audio source identities. Secondly the system administrator chooses that is configures audio source identities for device or devices or device pools. Thirdly the holding parties can only define which audio source identity applies to the parties that are held.
