Finding a pattern to your gout symptoms may be a bit difficult at first, but understanding each symptom and how it works with your body can only increase the chances that you will be able to fight this horrible condition.

How Does Gout Work?

Gout works when uric acid is introduced to the body. While most people have a small amount of uric acid in their bodies, the kidneys work very hard to flush it away. However, in people with weak or damaged kidneys, the uric acid simply has no way to leave the body. As a result, the uric acid is forced to stay in the blood stream. Once it stays too long, it begins to harden. This causes it to drift and settle into the joint, particularly those of the big toe and the ankles. It is at this point that you will notice your gout symptoms. You are having another gout episode.

Gout Phase 1

For most people, the first signs of gout make up phase one. You may notice a simple symptom like a pain in your big toe. You may think up several possible causes: perhaps you hit it on the door as you stumbled to the bathroom in the dark, perhaps it got stepped on. No matter how hard you think though, it is important to know that this is only one of the first signs. Phase one will last five to ten days.

Gout Phase 2

During phase two, you may notice few or no gout symptoms. You can eat the foods that you like, despite the information your doctor may have given you. This phase may last a month or two, but sooner or later, your gout symptoms will return.

Gout Phase 3

If you continue to ignore your problem, phase three will occur when you have a persistent swelling or stiffness in the affected areas. For the most part, the pain will be severe. It will recede occasionally, but it will come back with a measure of force.
