Archery is fast becoming a sport that many people are finding as a good recreational hobby. However, in the beginning of civilizations, bow hunting was a way to provide a large tribe of people with a substantial amount of food to last for long periods of time. Bow hunting is still popular, but today it is used mainly as a hobby and not necessarily as a means to survive. It has also become a sport that involves a good amount of skill in order to do properly.

One of the first techniques that an archer should learn is the main form of aiming. Luckily only two types of aiming exist, instinctive and sight shooting. Instinctive shooting is the actual coordination between the eyes and the bow arm. In the beginning of the sport, this was the type of shooting that one could find most often.

With today's technology, though, sight shooting has become the far more likely method used when shooting a bow and arrow. With sight shooting, one uses a special instrument that is placed on the side of the bow to help align the target. Instinctive shooting is much more difficult to accomplish then sight shooting.

In today's world of archery there are different types of competitions held. The main ones that are seen worldwide in competitions are target and field. Target is when one shoots the bow and arrow without a sight at a target that can be out in an open field or sometimes in a wooded area.

Target sport is the most popular type of competitive sport for use with a bow and arrow. Field sport is when an arrow is shot in very rough terrain as if one was bowhunting. Field sport is a very popular activity that even has fake animals used as targets.

Archery is more than just trekking out into the woods and hunting down an animal. It has become an true sport even featured at the prestigious Olympics. The skills that are needed in order to pursue this endeavor may seem beyond you at first but with time and effort you can become a true marksman.

Before long you will be outside enjoying what Mother Nature has to offer as you hone your skills. This is a sport that anyone of any age can participate in. All that is required is that you be able to pull back that taut bow and let it rip.
