Sonic Drift 2 was developed as sequence to Sonic Drift. This is the first game where Metal Sonic and Nack becomes a playable character. There are also other playable characters in Sonic Drift 2 including Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Dr. Robotnik, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, Fang, and Knuckles.

SEGA initially released the game in Japan. The official debut date for Sonic Drift 2 is 17th March 1995 in Japan. Later, SEGA released the game in Europe in November 1995. Players that win the race will be rewarded with the Chaos of Emeralds. The mission of the game is to accumulate every single Chaos of Emeralds in the Blue GP. There are all together six Chaos of Emeralds which you should collect. If you successfully collect all the Chaos Emeralds, you will proceed to the final stage. In the final stage, you will face with Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic Drift 2 features three levels including Purple Chaos GP, White Chaos GP, and Blue Chaos GP. Each of the level has 6 race tracks. The player must pass through all three Chaos GP levels before he can win the game. Once the six Chaos Emeralds are found, the characters will proceed to face with Dr. Robotnik. The final race takes place in the Death Egg race track.

The characters in Sonic Drift 2 are Sonic, Tails, Amy, Dr. Robotnik, Metal Sonic, Fang, and Knuckles. Each of the character can perform a special move. Sonic has the ability to perform speed dash. If you play as Tails, you can jump up to a very high height. The jump over effect is the same as the effect produced by the spring power up. Amy, who is featured driving the Breeze vehicle has a special ability called toss heart. If Amy performs the toss heart, the other characters in the game will be forced to slow down. Metal Sonic can implement the super speed dash. Fang sits in the vehicle called Marvelous Queen. Fang can throw the sling oil balls at other opponents and cause them to become collided. If you play as Knuckles, you can punch other opponent at a distance. The punch can only reach a limited range. Knuckle also has the ability to jump high up into the sky. The height of the jump over effect is the same as the spring power up.

There are several power ups that is located throughout the game. Player that collect two rings will be able to perform a special attack. The spring power up will launch the player into the sky. The star power up will create a screen white for other characters. The reversal ball makes the steering wheel of the vehicle turn in a reverse direction. If you found the red monitor, you will rush down the track incredibly fast. The blue monitor helps the character to become invincible. The character will only stay invincible for some time. The yellow monitor gives the player the same ability as the spring power up. The game has a black monitor power up which allows you to throw a mine to the rivals.
