Leaf Fans Golf for a Good Cause

Tim Wharnsby at the Globe on Hockey Blog recognizes the good work of Steve and Mike Pearl, who launched an annual golf tournament, called the Gentle Ben Charity classic, in memory of their father Ben, who died of lung cancer. Participants this year will play “two rounds of golf down in the Dallas area…[and] take in the Cowboys-Jets game this afternoon at Texas Stadium and the Leafs-Stars game at the American Airlines Center on Friday.” The Leaf’s weak season hasn’t “dampened the spirit” of almost 100 faithful fans “who have made their way down to Dallas in the spirit of raising $200,000 for cancer support and research.”

The post explains that the money raised will go to four Toronto-area cancer foundations or funds. The brothers have raised over a half-million dollars over the nine years of the tournament. “Every year, we try to make the Gentle Ben bigger and better, and it has really become the ultimate sports weekend,” Mike Pearl said. The aim is to make the event fun. The organizers say that “heading to Dallas and seeing the Leafs on the road has proved to be a huge draw, and really revved up our fundraising efforts.”

Not so Much Pleasure in Production of Tremblay’s Play

In the latest post in Stage Blog, Jon Kaplan reviews a local production of Michel Tremblay’s For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, directed by Lee Poulin and running until Dec 1st. The story is an autobiographical “love letter to his mother, a strong-willed woman who inspired Tremblay's imagination and a love of language.” The play contains a series of scenes in which we watch the Narrator grow up in 1950’s Montreal. The main focus is on his mother Nana, a “larger-than-life figure who berates and soothes him… [and] recounts family stories for the umpteenth time, reveals a love of romantic fiction and offers the occasional philosophic musing.”

Kaplan states in his post that there is definitely “some fine writing and more than a few laughs,” but under Poulin’s direction, Darlene Spencer, who plays Nana, doesn't give the character proper depth. “Sometimes the character seems to spill beyond the boundary of the stage, but there's a subtlety as well, a suggestion that there's something beneath the melodrama and the overstatement.” As well, in the early scenes, “Spencer strikes a strident note and doesn't let go; the result can be exhausting for the viewer.” The performance redeems itself somewhat in Paul Hardy’s performance as the Narrator, Marysia Bucholc's design, and the “theatrical magic in the final scene.”

Chris Bosh Plays Monster Game in Raptor’s Win

Michael Montgomery, blogger for Raptors Den, gives us a post-game breakdown of the Raptor victory over the Grizzlies last night, a nice reprieve from two tough blows: the loss to Dallas the night before and a stinger that left T.J. Ford out of the game. Due to Ford’s absence, “Jose Calderon got his first start of the season, while Darrick Martin got his first playing action of the season.” Chris Bosh had a “monster of a first half,” scoring 12 points, but found him self in four trouble, “picking up his 3rd personal foul with 2:43 left in the second quarter and his 4th personal foul on the offensive end barely over a minute into the second half.”

In the post, Montgomery give kudos to Grizzly Mike Miller, who led the way during in the first half scoring 12 points. “Pau Gasol also had 9 points in the first half for the Grizzlies.” But the Grizzlies struggled in the first half, “missing all 8 of their 3-point attempts, [while] the Raptors… shot 4 of 9 from behind the arch.” The Grizzly struggle surprised the blogger, considering both teams “are top 3 in the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage. The Grizzlies turned it around for a lead at 7:53 left in the fourth quarter, but the Raptors stepped up and went “on a 16-5 run over the next 7-plus minutes to come back and take an 89-82 lead with 34 seconds left in the game.” The Grizzlies never recovered and the Raptors came away with a 95-89 victory.

Exploring the Unexpected in an Unassuming Neighborhood

In a recent post in the Torontoist, Adam D. Miller calls attention to the fact that in the “city of neighborhoods,” these areas are generally defined by the intersection of two streets. Sometimes, those intersections are overlooked. He brings up Bayview & Eglinton, “there’s not much to look at upon arrival at this intersection…you’ve got a shopping plaza… a rather large McDonald’s.” But a few blocks south will help you get a feel for what the neighborhood is really about.

In the post, Miller gives a bit of Leaside history before taking readings on a walking tour of the neighborhood. If you journey south on Bayview Avenue “it won’t take long before you’re struck by the sheer variety… one of the most eclectic mixes of stores and restaurants in the city.” The neighborhood boasts one Toronto’s best patisseries, the eccentric Elegant Garage Sale, a mystery book store called Sleuth of Baker Street, a tea emporium, Duffs Famous Wings, Thai-Vietnamese, and gelato to name but a few. “There’s a lot more to Bayview & Eglinton than Sunnybrook Plaza and McDonald’s… next time you visit a relatively quiet and homogenous intersection, try exploring a little further.”
