The amount of debt you currently carry may seem overwhelming. So much so, that you really avoid taking the necessary steps you need to take to get yourself out of debt. Please don't let this happen to you. Sure, climbing out from that mountain of debt you've accumulated may not be something you want to think about but eventually it will come back to bite you. And it will be a much worse situation in the future. So what can you do about your debt now?

There are a number of preliminary issues you'll need to tackle as you put together your debt consolidation and debt elimination plan. You have to come clean about the truth of your current financial situation. For those in debt, this is one of the things they most like to avoid. They feel if they don't face the cold hard truth of their financial numbers, then it won't be true. But we know that's not the case, don't we? So you need to start by getting an accurate picture of your finances.

You also need to get a true look at your monthly spending. And I'm not just talking about your mortgage, rent, utilities, gas, car, car insurance, etc. payments. I'm talking about all those little expenses that add up as well; the daily coffee, eating lunch out every day, magazines, etc. These things add up and in order to put together a solid debt reduction plan, you need to know where all of your money is going each month.

You need to grab a copy of all your credit reports. Where do you stand today as far as your credit score goes? Is it accurate? Your credit score will affect a lot of what you can do as far as debt consolidation loans and other things you can put into place to get out of debt.

How is your overall financial health look? This includes everything about your finances - value of your home, any equity you may have in your home, investments, life insurance, etc.

Seeing your financial numbers naked on paper can be tough to swallow, especially if you're buried under debt. But it's a necessary step to allow you to get rid of that debt and move forward, building your net worth, enjoying life, and allowing you to stop stressing about your debt and avoiding calls from creditors.
