Kowloon Park - a Military Base Turned to a Beautiful Public Park

Having been a central military base over-looking the Victoria harbor in 1830s, this important site was later turned to a public park as "Kowloon Park" in 1970. The park is located at the center of Tsim Sha Tsui covering a land area around 13.5 hectares and to day it is considered as one of the most visited and largest public sites in Hong Kong.

 

The park has been designed in traditional Chinese style and it always gives a pleasant look with its large number of trees and flowers and rare birds. Bainiao Garden and Bird Lake are two main picturesque features that attract everyone who visit the park. Also the mini-sized football playground, children's amusement park, the gymnasium and the swimming pool are the other key elements that sustain the high number of visitors every year. Particularly the large swimming pool can hold up to 1500 people providing all the facilities with best equipments.

 

People who spend free time while walking and jogging in the park is a common view of the park and visitors should not miss the chance of bird watching at Bird Lake that is home for more than 140 birds of about 38 diverse species. On the other way, for sportive individuals, the gymnasium gives the opportunity to involve in several indoor sports, which are popular among young people.

 

There is also a museum that is housed by the preserved historic barracks, illustrating the history of British colonization in Hong Kong and other historical articles which have been found as the evidences of important historical events. More over visitors could improve their understanding about good health and fitness at Health education exhibition and resources centre. The leisure and cultural services department also organizes martial arts demonstrations at the Sculpture Park on Sun days while setting many arts and crafts stalls for visitors' enjoyment.
