A vaginal hysterectomy is a surgery that will be preformed if a woman has medical conditions that make it necessary. All other options to treat the condition will be done before surgery will be recommended. If the uterus is enlarged this type will not be possible because in vaginal hysterectomy the uterus is removed through the vagina. If it is necessary, the fallopian tubes and the ovaries may also be removed but not always. If a hysterectomy is needed this type is recommended if possible because studies have shown that it is the safest type. Some reasons for a vaginal hysterectomy would include the following.

Two conditions that can cause you to bleed excessively are called "menorrhagia" and "metrorrhagia". If you suffer from these conditions and your physician can not get it under control by using medications, then you may be required to have the vaginal hysterectomy. Bleeding excessively can cause you to experience different problems that could be serious. These can also cause you a lot of other medical problems. A vaginal hysterectomy can only be performed if you have a condition that is limited to your uterus only. If the surrounding area has been affected then this will not help your condition.

There are many conditions that may require a vaginal hysterectomy. There is a condition called pelvic organ prolapse. This condition is caused when the pelvic muscles have been stretched from having children or other reason and these muscles are very weak. Another condition is called fibroids which is where growths begin to grow on the uterine muscles. These growths can cause a lot of problems even though they are not cancerous. Before you begin the surgery your physician will discuss with you whether or not to also remove your fallopian tubes and ovaries while performing the hysterectomy. This will have to be decided in advance as you will not be able to discuss it at the time of the surgery. This is only a few of the conditions that can make it necessary for a woman to have a vaginal hysterectomy.

As we all know with surgery, comes complications. There will be a chance of bleeding excessively and of course you will experience pain. The most serious complication is infection. However, there is less risk with the vaginal hysterectomy than with a complete hysterectomy. The benefits can also greatly outweigh the risk in many circumstances. You will need time to heal but this type of surgery also allows you to heal much faster. If you are concerned about scars there will be none visible with the vaginal hysterectomy. Follow your doctor's advice and you can decrease the possibility of complications arising.
