The essence of womanhood lies in giving birth to a child. Childbirth is the most beautiful experience a woman can have but might turn risky in the absence of adequate precautions. To minimize the risk of birth defects, prenatal vitamins are essentially recommended for women by the doctors. Prenatal vitamins are touted as beneficial for women prior to getting pregnant. The continued use of these nutrition pills during pregnancy and breastfeeding is advisable to reduce or avert the chances of nutrition deficiencies. Prenatal vitamins are suggested because a pregnant woman has to take care of herself and the child inside her. However, women have to be sure of the kinds of prenatal vitamins they take. She herself requires essential vitamins in sufficient quantities while babies need more of folic acid and calcium.

Prenatal vitamins have to be used more as supplements of food because mere intake of prenatal vitamins is not adequate for pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins do not have to be used as a replacement of food. In fact, such vitamins are more effective if they are taken with a healthy diet that includes a variety of food. This can be attributed to the fact that prenatal vitamins themselves are known to be lacking in certain vital things such as calcium. In an average prenatal vitamin, the amount of calcium available is only 250 mg, therefore a pregnant woman who needs an average of 1200 - 1500 mg of calcium for herself and for her baby to grow, cannot solely rely on prenatal vitamins. An important point to be considered in prenatal vitamins is to know all about the ingredients of vitamins and how well they are absorbed in the body. It is advisable that prenatal vitamins used be less than 10,000 IU because excessive use of vitamins such as vitamin A can cause birth defects. Too much iron might not get absorbed properly leading to some pregnancy defects.

Prenatal vitamins are essential for warding off all the risks associated with pregnancy and ensuring the health of a newborn child. However, it can be effective only if used properly with a proper diet.
