In the section of your local craft store dedicated to wood crafts, you can often find great wooden trays. Great for breakfast in bed, or for carrying food to the dinner table, they are available in a multitude of styles and sizes. They can be oval or rectangular. Some may have ornate, scalloped edges. They're decorative and quaint and can make a great gift for a hard-to-buy-for loved one.

The great part about purchasing a tray in the wood crafts section of the craft store is that they're unfinished, a blank canvas ready for your special touches. Here are several crafty ideas for livening up a plain wooden serving tray.

- Why not try decoupage? Wooden trays are the perfect canvas for stunning decoupage. It's an easy technique that goes well with wood. Gift-wrap in bright colors or aesthetically-pleasing patterns is a perfect choice. Another great idea is to find a magazine with clip out your favorite pieces of artwork or photos. For a gift, why not consider using beloved photos of family or a special vacation? Once you've selected your papers, you'll need to buy Mod Podge, which is readily available for purchase at most craft stores. A multi-purpose item, Mod Podge is sealer, glue and finisher all in one. For those unfamiliar with decoupage, a quick internet search on your favorite search engine will readily turn up instructions.

- Use stickers. They're not for kids only. Go ahead and buy a few. Stickers can be festive and fun. You can find stickers for just about any occasions. They're a perfect way to brighten up plain wooden serving tray, particularly if used in conjunction with the decoupage technique. Stickers are also a great idea if you're planning on doing this project with younger children.

- Paint your tray. Wooden trays make a great medium on which to paint. Why not choose a bright solid or, for those with the gift of artistry, why not consider your tray a blank canvas and paint something wonderful?

- Mosaic. Why not decorate your tray in bright bits of glass or tile? Wooden trays are particularly conducive to the techniques of mosaic. Again, visit your local craft store for supplies and directions.

- Accessorize. Hot glue bows and buttons onto the side of the tray where they won't interfere with items being carried.

The possibilities for turning a plain wooden tray into something wonderful are endless. Combine techniques. Be imaginative. The sky is the limit in, and with some patience and thought, you can create a keepsake perfect for special occasions or as a gift for someone you cherish.
