Little SEO Mistakes That Make Huge Differences

Everybody has little things they wish they would have known or little things they would have changed after finishing a big project. This is a list of little mistakes I've made in SEO that set me back.

Little Mistake #1: Inconsistent URL when building links

"http://www.mysite.com" is a completely different site than "http://mysite.com" in search engines eyes. When I first started I would switch back and forth without even thinking about it. When you build your site pick one URL and stick to it. You're links will be more potent and concentrated that way.

Little Mistake #2: Focusing on Quantity not Quality when building links

Ever wonder how a site with 30 backlinks is outranking a site that has 2,000? It's because the site with 30 backlinks has high quality links. The site with 2,000 backlinks worked very hard but just got weak sites to link back to him.

Instead of going through thousands sites on directories consider targeting the top 50 sites in your field of interest and try to buy or trade links with them.

Little Mistake #3: Taking backlinks down after a short amount of time

Google hates the idea of backlinks being purchased. One indication that you've bought a link is that a link will be up for a few months and then will disappear. If you ever buy a link, plan on keeping it for a very long time (maybe even years).

Little Mistake #4: Over-optimizing a site

There is such a thing as "over-optimization". The first time I learned about putting keywords in the title, h1 tag, image tags, and in the content I went crazy on it. I still use keywords in my title and H1 tags but I don't stuff so many keywords in menus, sidebars, image alt tags, or in the paragraphs.

It is much better to match the top site's keyword density rather than double their density. If they have a keyword density of 5% don't try 20% thinking that will put you over the top. Chances are that kind of density will get you penalized instead of rewarded.

Little Mistake #5: Linking to irrelevant sites

My friend has a site with hundreds of brightly colored, off beat, comics. He gets tons of links from blogs and other sites referencing his popular comics. When I saw that he had a popular site I wanted to get a link from his site to mine. Luckily I didn't get a link to his site because it would have done more harm than good in the long run.

Having a cartoon site link to a credit card site will most likely hurt the credit card site instead of helping it. If a site isn't related to my site I won't even consider putting up a link.
