Got a dog and want to show everyone that he can do beyond licking and wagging its tail? Want to teach him new tricks so he could get the appreciation and admiration of everybody? Yes you do. And what your dog needs is proper dog training that will benefit everyone. Your dog will not only become well-behaved but also both of you will have time to bond better together. He will become calmer and controllable; thus he will become more pleasing to visitors.
So to begin, understand really why your dog behaves the way it does. Most often, dogs care only about food and play. But it still depends on the dog. All dogs, although tamed, are like wolves that are considered "pack animals". They think everyone in the household is part of the pack. Ordinarily they don't want to be the leader of the pack. But similar to a wildlife environment, if nobody steps up, they feel compelled to assume leadership.
Therefore, for you to train your dog effectively, he must look up to you as the leader of his pack. This is what they want for they feel protected when someone outranks them. It depends upon you to assume the role. But you have to be consistent and firm. It might seem mean but you have to establish this "chain of command" over him. Things like exiting the door or eating first before him will help establish the role of being his superior. Do not fear to "pull rank" either. If he is used to sit on a certain area of the couch, tell him to get up and replace him.
Those acts might appear rude but it was important for consistency purposes. However, remember not to abuse or beat your dog. No matter how disappointed you are in training him, don't hurt him because doing so only makes matters worse. He will feel your frustration and become anxious too. Then the training will eventually turn out to failure.
Consistency-this is the key. Focus and don't give up on any routine unless he learns what you are trying to teach him. They say repeated action form a habit. So don't fail to review every discipline you have taught because, just like humans, dogs forget too. Know well your dog's character and you are on the running for a successful training.
