For your hunting dog to go the distance and do the task you got it for, it is a must that your dog is give proper and adequate dog training. You might hire a professional trainer for hunting dog training, or carry out the task yourself. Hiring a pro might be your first choice, but then, by training your dog yourself, you would establish the special friendly bond with your pet that you otherwise would not be able to. Besides, hiring a trainer especially for this purpose could be an expensive affair.

I personally recommend that you teach you dog yourself. Since hunting dogs are trained primarily to go out on trails, you personally would learn a lot about the dog's traits while training him personally, which, in turn, would help you, get a better hold of him at the trail. If you have enough time on your hands, go and train you dog yourself, so that you don't have to be formal with him on trails, rather, both of you can just be yourselves and give your best to the trail.

Ruling out the possibility of hiring a professional altogether would also not be appropriate by any means. A training professional is the best bet for those dog masters who do not have the time to spend on their dogs, and want their dogs to perform specific purposes only. For instance, if you want your dog to do only a generic trail and follow only a few fixed commands, then there is no harm in trying a professional trainer, who would teach your dog exactly to follow the commands you want him to follow. Some trainers are really good at teaching your dogs some of the commands that are going to come in handy quite frequently while on the trail. Such an investment can be really worth the money.

While training the dog, you should keep in mind that the dog should be able to foresee dangers, and it is the survival that is more important than actual hunting. The dog should be able to sense possible danger, from larger animals for example, and should be able to intimate his master. The dog should know when to stop at the master's command. The dog, due to a shorter visibility range, might not be able to spot larger animals and might run towards them, attracted by the smell. The dog should not get carried away with the smell, and rather it should obey its master's commands of stopping and reverting back.

Like the generic god accessories such as cardigans, dog beds, dog collars and dog clothes, there are specific accessories for dog training as well. These might include hunting training leashes, sticks, smell enhancing accessories and food supplements that would enhance your dog's ability to hunt and train well. You might want to invest in some of these options as they provide a certain level of comfort and flexibility for your dog while he learns the tactics and the skills involved in hunting.
