Colloidal Silver - Explanation of the Term "Colloidal"

Colloidal silver has become quite popular nowadays. But what does the term "colloidal" actually mean? Let's start from the beginning: colloidal silver is the name given to silver particles that are suspended in distilled water.

Basically, the colloid refers to the actual particles - particles that can have mostly 0.015 microns in diameter. These particles are found in a dispersion state and they are unable to cross the wall of the membranes (the cellular membrane). Due to their tiny dimensions, they actually "defy" the gravity law and this is precisely why they remain suspended in water.

But colloids are not all the same or, better said, colloidal silver can have various concentrations of such tiny particles. Still, patients have to be aware of the fact that really high concentrations might have unwanted effects upon the organism (even though some might think that higher concentrations equal a higher effectiveness), as the colloid might actually attack the friendly bacteria, too, while eliminating the unwanted pathogens. Therefore, the recommended concentration should be around 15 ppm to 20 ppm.

Besides the concentration, there is another aspect that needs to be taken into consideration before beginning the treatment with colloidal silver: there are some products that are based on ionic silver. This substance is different than the colloidal silver, since colloidal silver includes particles and not ions. The main difference between the two is the fact that the ionic silver is highly reactive, meaning that it combines with other substances, such as chloride. Chloride can be found in the human body and, as a result of the combination, the ionic silver will form silver chloride. So using a Colloidal Silver with high amounts of ionic silver, is really not useful within the body.

There are many substances that are called colloids. More precisely, colloids can be of many kinds, ranging from the gas to the liquid and solid ones. Even familiar substances, such as certain aliments (mayonnaise, butter) ink and dust are actual colloids. The sizes of these different colloidal substances range significantly, from less than 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer.
