Just like any home repair project, adding or replacing tired window treatments can do wonders for the look of a room. But for many people this is an overwhelming undertaking. The good news is, reviving your window coverings can be done quickly and easily, if you plan ahead.

Here are some tips on how to go about making over your windows:

1) Don't get intimidated by the idea that you have to update all your window treatments at once. Doing one room at a time can help you break the project up into smaller pieces, and it allows you to focus on one activity. Completing a room will give you a sense of accomplishment, and encourage you to move onto the next room with renewed enthusiasm. It might also jumpstart your creativity, so you'll be better equipped to tackle the next room.

2) Complete a needs assessment. Walk through your home and taken inventory of what you're trying to accomplish. Measure all the windows in your home so you have a central list from which to work. Draw sketches if it helps you visualize what you'd like the window treatments to look like. Note any irregular-sized windows. As you go through the house and list your window sizes, determine your goals for each window. Each window may have its own specific challenges. One window might need immediate attention, because a neighbor's window faces it. Another window might let in too much light. Evaluate each window on an individual basis to determine the best solution.

3) Pay attention to window treatments that you see in magazines, books and in homes, and get a feel for your preferences. Open your mind to a variety of colors, textures and styles, even if you don't think it's your "taste". Take note of the methods and materials used, and think of ways to adapt the ideas to your own home.

4) Plan the project. Take your needs assessment and prioritize it either by length of the project (short, easy ones first to build your confidence) or importance (if some windows need attention faster than others).

5) If you're on a budget, execute your plan in stages. Start with the basics: shades and blinds. Then move on to drapes and curtains. When that's done, and you're ready to continue, add the finishing hardware and tiebacks.

These tips will help you begin revamping your window treatments. With careful planning, breathing new life into your home will be a snap!
