Fences can be crafted from many different types of materials, and in a wide variety of styles. So many options can make choosing a fence difficult. But worry no more. Choosing a fence is only as difficult as you make it and can sure be much easier with a little knowledge under your tool belt.

Before you rush off to the hardware store or other place to shop for your fencing needs, read on for some preliminary steps that can save you a lot of time. These steps can help you save time, money and a lot of frustration in the end.

The first step to take when trying to choose fence materials is to determine what purpose your new fence will serve. For example, popular reasons that a lot of people list for setting up fences focus around the following:

• For decorative purposes
• To help establish boundary lines
• As protection against burglars and trespassers
• To help protect children, keeping them out of surrounding streets, woods, etc.
• To help keep animals out of the yard (like near wooded areas)
• To keep pets penned in your yard
• For the support of climbing plants

Spend some time thinking about your reasons why you want to have a fence put up. And then, consider these various types of fencing materials available to see which would work best in with your plans:

• Chain link fence
• Barbwire fence
• Electric fences
• Small garden fences
• Picket fence
• Wooden fence
• Invisible fence

Now take time to consider which type of fence is right for your project and environment. And to do that, let's consider what each type of fence is best for, what purpose it serves best. And also let's see which fence might be more practical for your purposes as well.

Take the above chain link fence into consideration first. It can help keep your children or a pet in your yard, and it can also help ward off burglars and intruders. The second type, or the barbwire fence, can sure help mark boundary lines and ward off 3rd parties, too, but would be unsafe with children and domestic pets in the city. Just like a chain link fence, a wooden fence can keep pets and children in the yard.

So go through each type and compare your check list of reasons for having a fence put in place with the main features of the fence, the main purpose each serves, to get a better idea of which type would work best for your project.
