The four-piece indie rock/post-punk revival band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield, England Arctic Monkeys rose to fame in 2006. Their two singles, I Bet You Look Good On The Dance floor and When The Sun Goes Down, both went straight to number one in the UK Singles Chart. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of four 19-year-old teenagers. Let's make a short review of their success.

Unlike many of their contemporaries, who were marketed and advertised extensively by record labels, Arctic Monkeys achieved their success through fan-made demo tapes and online file-sharing, with fans singing along at gigs of songs which had never been officially released. In his interview to a British magazine owner of the Sister Ray music shop in London Phil Burton noted that in fall 2005 they were dashed will calls by fans of the Arctic Monkeys, eager to but their single Fake Tales of San Francisco. Though the band remained in shadow, as many as 50 people's were registered calling every day inquiring their single. The success seems overwhelming, even for Madonna.

At their 2005 concerts, the band are better known for their sing-along nature and fan participation than for excessive lighting effects, pyrotechnics or other effects. Fans frequently join in, with the entire intro to When The Sun Goes Down typically sung by the crowd.[14] However, their somewhat frugal shows have sometimes been criticized by reviewers. Eventually, the band signed to independent record label Domino Records, releasing their first album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, which charted at number one and broke the record for the largest first week sales of a debut album in UK history.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history, selling 363,735 copies in the first week. However, Arctic Monkeys strive for larger success. They allege they can do it. Music critics believe Arctic Monkeys are just about to cause a music revolution.
