Reasons Why Some Webmasters Fail When Promoting Their Website

I am often asked to help small businesses to promote their website. I advise them to read and keep up to date with the Google guidelines, to submit articles and to obtain good quality one-way backward links. From time to time I have an e-mail from these webmasters asking why their website is not in the top of Google, I then look into what might have gone wrong, in this article I will be writing about the common mistakes these people make which ultimately can cost them not only high search rankings but also a heck of a lot of money.

This was the content of one e-mail that I recently sent to a friend of mine:

The higher that your site goes up the rankings the more chance it has of being reviewed by Google. They may look at the make up of your backward links and will then decide whether you are trying to spam your way to the top. This is why I advised against the type of links that were in one of my previous e-mails; that is paid links and excessive link exchanges.

A page which has over, lets say, ten outward links, is basically quite poor and is likely to have little or no link value. A link that does count is one that is earned. As an example, a webmaster who thinks that you have written a good quality article and therefore decides to include it on their website. You therefore deserve this link and the power that it gives.

A page full of backward links either includes paid links or are as part of a link exchange, both very damaging. This form of web promotion worked in 2007 but we are now in 2008, things have changed. Unfortunately most webmasters do not keep up to date with the Google guidelines; in fact it is a good thing as it helps me stay at the top of the search engines.

I would not personally worry at this stage, it may just be doing what is called "a dance", therefore just a temporary adjustment and it may well be that no-one from Google has reviewed your site and its backward links. For the future you do need to stick to the rules, I am trying to help you but you seem to not be listening at times. The site looks good; there is no point in wasting your investment by not promoting it in the correct manner.
