New York The City That Never Sleeps

Few cities have created conjured such vivid images in the collective consciousness as New York. Forget L.A., it is New York, which is the movie capital of the world. For it is the movies, which gives us our first impressions of the city. Reality, thankfully, lives up to such idealised expectations. Vacations of almost any description can be enjoyed in New York. Shopping excursions continue to be popular, particularly around the prime sales period around Thanksgiving.

Firm favourites remain Century 21, Woodbury Common and Barneys for bargains galore. For those more interested in its cultural attractions the magnificent Metropolitan Museum of Art must be your first port of call. Other highlights include the MOMA and Ellis Island Museum. Then there are those quintessential sights, which any self-respecting visitor to New York must take in; the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the Empire State Building.

For those travelling on a budget check out hotel rates just before or after the main American public holidays, you may be pleasantly surprised! Exploring the many cheap and cheerful eateries around the city can make other savings. Plentiful, culturally varied food can be enjoyed in almost any part of New York. At night, catch a show on Broadway or explore some of the bars and nightclubs for which the city is renowned. Budget tickets to top shows can be purchased on Times Square but, be warned, choices are limited and touts do also operate in the area.

The hustle and bustle of the city may take some getting used to but is all part of its charm. Tipping is customary in all restaurants and bars. Be warned waiting staff will be only too happy to remind you, should you forget this American custom.

New York, indeed, has something for everyone. From first time visitor to seasoned traveler its appeal is constant.
