It happens every year. The eyes of the world turn to one city for one reason: to watch two battle tested contenders face off to determine who is champion of the world. In 2009, that city will be Tampa, Florida. While we don't know which two teams will make it to the big game, one thing is for certain: there will be plenty of celebration and service during the days and weeks leading up to the game.
Most people know about the star-studded parties and other events that typically surround the game. It's all over the papers the day after. What doesn't always get much coverage is the fact the Superbowl is all about giving back to the communities that host it. Each year, a Youth Education Center is built in the host city that serves underprivileged kids. It offers education, resources and different activities that are designed to help each child reach whatever goals they may have for themselves. It encourages hard work and dedication to help these kids rise above whatever obstacles might be in their way.
Another way the Superbowl will be giving back to Tampa long after the game is over is through their environmental program. They donate unused food to food banks, plant trees, donate building materials to local companies and make sure they use only renewable energy source during the time the NFL is here. They also host dinners and other outreach events designed to benefit local charities.
Many people will be traveling to Tampa to witness the big game in person. They'll, of course, need hotels, transportation and places to eat. It's a further from the stadium (about 12-14 miles), but it allows pets, is close to fun attractions like Busch Gardens and even has a pool for the kids.
