The sauna design is obviously related to individual needs such as how many bathers to accommodate, the kind of heater to use as well as the limitations placed by existing buildings. The smallest sauna should be designed to fit at least two bathers, and the sauna design can be modest enough to fit in an apartment or be large enough to require a separate building.

Should Allow For Fresh Air Ventilation

The sauna design should also allow for at least one shower as well as have some water for cleaning purposes. If there are many people to accommodate, a second shower may also be required. Placing the sauna is also part of the sauna design, and it should ideally be situated next to an exterior wall to enable fresh air ventilation through the wall. If the design does not allow for the sauna to be close to an exterior wall, arranging proper ventilation can prove to be difficult.

Also, a suitable changing room should be situated close by, and an additional room that can be used to dry as well as undress and change should also be a part of the sauna design. The size of the sauna depends on the number of bathers, how benches are to be placed as well as the space requirements of heater and the method of heating.

A good sauna design should allow for a sauna to be six to seven feet high to allow for a three to four feet clearance above the highest bench. Also, the bench height has traditionally been higher than the heater, though this has changed with saunas becoming properly heated as well as allowing for sufficient heating in the sauna room.

The bench space should allow for at least two feet of bench space per bather, and the bench should be between one foot and three feet deep to make for a pleasant setting. In addition, the sauna design should allow for benches to be placed in a number of ways in the sauna, and includes one long bench, L-shaped as well as U-shaped benches. The wood to be used for the benches should also be chosen with care.

The sauna design should also be such that the heater is placed at a safe distance away from the door as well as benches. And, the storage space in the dressing room should be sufficient to keep a few clean towels, and wooden stools are best for seating in the shower room.
