Christchurch Cathedral dates back to 1038, when it was founded by Sitric Silkbeard, King of the Vikings and Donat the 1st Bishop of Dublin. According to legend the Cathedral was built in wood. Obviously, since its humble beginnings, the Cathedral has seen many rebuilds and extensive renovations. This explains the many different examples of architecture seen at the Cathedral such as Victorian, gothic, Norman and Romanesque.
Christchurch is indeed a treasure trove! The archives contain "The Black Book" (1110 - 1472) and "The White Book" (1186 - 1585). These books contain a wealth of information on by-gone days. There's also an abundance of printed music, and you'll also find photocopies and microfilms of printed music housed elsewhere.
Although a sacred place, you definitely feel you are in the presence of greatness when you look back on what these holy grounds have seen. Famous Anglo-Norman Knight Strongbow's tomb was here, Richard the 2nd sat in state at the Cathedral, King James attended Mass here and King William the 3rd came here to give thanks for defeating King James the 2nd and presented a set of gold communion plates to the Cathedral. However, things weren't always Godly at the Cathedral - the Cathedral's crypt was used as a pub, a market and a business place in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Opening times…
June to August: 9am to 6pm
September to May: 9.45am to 5pm (sometimes 6pm)
During service there's limited access to the Cathedral.
Bell ringing is held every Sunday from 10am to 2.30pm with a practice session on Friday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. Visiting bell ringers are welcome, however it is advisable to contact the ringing master with your request.

There's an entrance fee to the Cathedral. It costs around 6.00 Euro for an adult or 4.00 Euro for a student or if you have a concession.
Christchurch Cathedral has and extensive timetable of services, the most notable service being "Peace Prayers" at 12 noon each day. For more information check out the Christchurch Cathedral Website.
How to get here…
Christchurch is situated in the heart of the Viking/Medieval area of Dublin. It's only a stone's throw from Grafton Street and Temple Bar.
Walking: From Trinity College, walk due west along College Green, Dame Street and Lord Edward Street.
By bus: 49, 50, 51B, 54A, 56A, 65, 77, 77A, 78A, 123.
By train: Take the DART as far as Tara Street. Take the feeder bus No.90 from Tara Street to Wood Quay.
