Videoconferencing: What Lies Beneath?

Videoconferencing is a combination of bidirectional transmission through simultaneous video and audio media to interact with a person who is at distant location. This technology is an innovation to chatting, as in chatting, the people can chat with each other through written dialogues and in video conferencing you can easily view each other on a monitor screen along with audio chatting.

Videoconferencing uses telecommunication of audio and video to bring people at different sites together for a meeting. Videoconferencing was first demonstrated in 1968 which illustrates an educational article in United States.

The components required for a Videoconferencing are as following:

* Video input : video camera or webcam
* Audio input: microphones
* Video output: computer monitor , television or projector
* Audio output: usually loudspeakers associated with the display device or telephone
* Data transfer: analog or digital telephone network, LAN or Internet

When Videoconferencing connects two or more locations to carry out group disconnection, it is called as Multipoint Control Unit (MCU).

Some videoconferencing Tools: We have some Videoconferencing tools that can make this technology more proficient. Some of them are as following:

Skype: Skype is most common and widely used free VoIP voice and chat application. It allows only one communication link, unless some third party plug-ins. The only demerit of this tool is that it lags behind in terms of video.

Yugma: Another free teleconferencing tool which allows communication up to 10 participants. It is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. One eye catching feature of the tool is that the number of participants can be increased up to 500 with some advanced features.

iChat: There is another VoIP and video conferencing tool in free teleconferencing tool list is iChat. This tool is basically for Mac users and the user must have a Mac account to make video calls.

Vbuzzer: offers free video conferencing on invitation, which can be done through their website, which also allows sending video mail.

Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional: is a paid Adobe products, Adobe Acrobat Connect is a powerful audio and video conferencing and file sharing tool which is a complete web communications solution. The only software requirement is Adobe Flash Player.

WebEx: is another paid video conferencing, chat and file sharing application. It can provide access between 10 participants. WebEx has powerful collaborative tools and interesting features. This product is suitable for individuals, small, medium and large businesses.

The concept of Videoconferencing is very good, but still it is not getting popularity on a stout extent. Some of the main reasons for its diminutive adoption are:

• Complexity of system

• Less awareness about the technology

• Bandwidth and quality of the service

• More expenses
