Chat rooms are created to hold discussions about any topic. They are popular, real-time modes of Internet communication used to initiate, establish, and maintain online relationships. Chat rooms are the highly popular and freewheeling areas on the internet where people with self-created nicknames discuss just about anything: teachers, Kafka, cute boys, politics, love, root canals. They can be like any other organized gathering of people; there are rules of etiquette that everyone is expected to follow. The oldest form of true chat rooms are the text-based variety. Many chats are real-time, live chat rooms, which also have the ability to send private messages which open up in a separate screen.

Online chat rooms began as a text based environment for people to communicate with each other and has since expanded to include voice and video as well as three dimensional avatars which represent you in a computer based world. Usually they have a list of rules for users to obey when they chat though they are not usually kept. Particularly in rooms for children, rules usually do not allow users to use offensive language, or to promote hate mail, violence and other negative issues. Also chat rooms often do not allow advertising in their rooms or flooding, which is continually filling the screen with repetitive text. Yet, most commonly these sites are not moderated and users may type what they personally choose to send.

Since there are hundreds of these free sites, paying for one probably isn't worth your while, unless the chat site offers added features that aren't available on the free ones. If you are visiting an online chat room that is not moderated, report any of the above activities to whoever runs the site you are using. People may lieabout their identity, accounts may be compromised, users may forget to log out, or an account may be shared by multiple people. Most users will be banned from the chat room for doing such activities..

While it was originally said that a chat room required synchronous conferencing, its definition has expanded to include all kinds of real time online chat, including instant messaging, graphical social environments, and asynchronous conferencing (forums and online bulletin boards). This kind of activity gives you instant access to all sorts of singles. Enhanced conference rooms are similar to chat rooms because they allow you to communicate instantly with a large number of people.
