About 85 years ago modern art in Thailand was introduced by Italian sculptor, Corrado Feroci, who was invited by the Siamese King Rama VI in 1924. The Italian artist created several bronze statues honouring the South East Asian nation's past heroes.

In 1932 the establishment of a constitutional monarchy took place due to a revolution and one year later Corrado Feroci received an assignment to found, within the Fine Arts department, an institute of fine arts. This new school's purpose was to introduce a new generation of painters and sculptors to modern art.

Until Feroci's death in 1962, the passionate Italian artists had worked extremely hard to realise this laudatory purpose. Eventually the school received the prestigious universitary status and the institute's name was changed to "Silpakorn University of Fine Arts". Silpa Bhirasri became Corrado Feroci's new name by which the Italian is still known today. Silpa Bhirasri is regarded as the founder of Thai Modern Art.

Following the country's introduction to modern art, Thai artists started experimenting with cubism and impressionism. Thai painting artists choose mainly rural and nature themes to depict normally devoid of individuals. Tawan Duchanee, Misiem Yipintsoi and Angkarn Kalayanapongsa led modern Thai art into different styles of painting than seen in the country during that period of time.

Some of Prateung Emjaroen and Tawan's creations featured Buddhist themes depicted in meticulous detail. Chakrabhand Posayakri became one of the most brilliant Thai art painters in this later period.

One of this period's other highly regarded artist was Acharn Saard, a master in depicting Thai realistic scenes. Saard's artworks, which were created using mainly oil paints feature a realistic depth of presentation and colour richness, equalled by a few Thai painting artists only.

Today, Thailand houses some of our planet's finest art painters. Particularly, the northern city of Chiang Mai is home to the most skilled portraits painting artists in Thailand.
