Man Mo Temple - Highlight of Literature and War
The traditional Chinese temple, Man Mo Temple, is to be found on Hollywood Road in Hong Kong from 1847. This temple also, like other Man Mo temples in China, is dedicated to Gods that represent many legends and beliefs of people. They are the two most venerated and worshiped Gods of China known as the - the God of War - Kwan Yu and the God of Literature - Man Cheung.
The Chinese words "Man" and "Mo" gives the meaning of "civil" and "military" and the two images of the Gods can be seen as the God Kwan Yu dressed in red with a sword and Man Cheung dressed in green with a writing brush in hand. Apart from that many other statues of gods related to the Buddhist and Taoist communities can be observed in every facet of the temple.
In 1900s when people could not settle down disputes by British law, they used to come to the temple expecting to find a solution by the legal system of the Qing Dynasty. Nowadays people visit the temple mostly during the spring festival not only to pray for fortune but also to donate money in great deal, which is mostly done by business men of financial communities.
Other feature that draws visitors' attention is the wooden sedan chairs with beautiful carvings of the God. They have been used to transport the statues of the two Gods along Hong Kong streets during religious festivals in the 19th century. It is a common view that huge tower-shaped incense coils are hung from the temple's ceiling and people burn them hoping that it will attract the attention of the Gods. A number of fortune tellers have set up small stalls close to the temple which attracts visitors who are willing to foresee their fortune in the future.
It will not be a matter when it comes to staying near the temple as one could easily find convenient accommodation in a stylish Hong Kong hotel like Hotel Jen. It is one of the prominent hotels in Hong Kong that promises a memorable hospitality service to its visitors.
Summary: Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road in Hong Kong is one of the historic temples in China, which is devoted for the two most worshiped Gods demonstrating important aspects of Buddhism and Taoism.
