Walking is in vogue. Will Self has written a book on the art of walking. Walking is hard-wired into our DNA and has enormous physical as well as mental benefits. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once declared, "All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." And so perhaps it's not so surprising that walking holidays have never been so popular.

And when it comes to choosing which B&B to stay in, there's really one spot in the British Isles that offers the ultimate walking experience: Cornwall's Tintagel. As well as breathtaking cliff walks, it isn't just alive with beauty but steeped in mythical history. For children who are fans of the TV show Merlin, they can cast their own spells in Merlin's Cave in Tintagel - just beneath Tintagel Castle - the cave that King Arthur's famous magician is said to have lived. The legend of King Arthur is one familiar to all Brits, and Tintagel is the birthplace of the man. The story goes that the King of England became besotted with the wife of the Duke of Tintagel and persuaded Merlin to disguise him as her husband. King Arthur, and his legion of characters including Lancelot and Guinevere, was conceived at Tintagel Castle.

It's a history that adds a little more magic to the coastal walk that takes you through beaches and through villages. The cliff walk from Tintagel offers a challenging but rewarding walk, and after you can recover with a proper Devonshire clotted cream tea, or indulge in the fantastic seafood the coastal town has on offer. The South West Coastal Path routinely tops the Top 10 UK walk polls with its unspoilt hidden coves, woodlands and beaches and its rich Jurassic-history. Even if it's raining, Tintagel has plenty to offer those staying in its friendly B&BS, thanks to the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle.
For a restorative walking holiday, you can't beat the allure of Cornwall, as G M Trevelyan famously said, "I have two doctors, my left leg and my right."
For a truly mythical and magical UK break, book your Tintagel B&B.
