80's, one decade which receives extreme reactions from all of us. Some of us love the decade and others don't seem to like it much. But everything was fantastical about the decade with crazy fashions and Madonna, the all time favorite. She seems to be as young to me as the memories of that time. Another thing I always seem to remember is playing with Karate Kid figures on my porch with my friends. Even now, I tend to watch the movie when I'm feeling a little nostalgic about the times but it doesn't look like a perfect action movie after having seen so many better ones with all those special effects and awesome stunts. The sequel probably incorporated all these to woo the then young generation. Part 1 is the 80's classic, nothing extraordinary but as the 80's entertainment piece, it ranks amongst the top few.

It has an extremely basic plot featuring Daniel Larusso, the new kid on the block. The role is played by Ralph Macchio, probably his best ever. After he moves in a old and tattered apartment with his mum, he is invited to a beach party where he meets his love. Unfortunate enough, she was the ex girlfriend of the gang leader of karate students called Cora Kai. He is beaten several times by him till he decided to learn karate. He finds himself a teacher, Mr. Miyagi who makes him face the bully in dojo. Now he has two months to train karate, get the girl of his dreams and win the All Valley Tournament in which he is selected.

I know the movie sounds familiar. The underdog, mean opponents, corrupt trainers… the usual. This is the kind of plot carried on in Rocky too maybe because they have been handled by the same director. This may not be the best karate lick but one of the best of the 80's.
