Teeth gnashed and jaws clenched. They are the signs that show how the present is becoming more and more stresful for people. Among the different things that cause tension are inflation, identity crisis, and job insecurity, and these are reflected in mouth movements that can be potentially harmful. What is starting to be a common condition among adults is bruxism, which is the grinding of teeth and clenching of jaws while sleeping. The clicking of jaw joints is creating side effects such as ear pain, headaches, and vertigo, and is considered nowadays to be a common neuromuscular problem.

Women, especially those above 40, are more prone than men to have bruxism, studies show. It may be that men's frustrations are reflected in stomach problems like ulcers, whereas women' tensions are released through the mouth. While orthodontics cannot cure the problem, one can prevent teeth damage by using a plastic retainer or jaw strap while asleep until such time that the tension causing frustration is dealt with.

Bruxism and other dental problems are what orthodontists are trying to figure out nowadays. The past years has seen orthodontists focusing not only on the straightening of teeth for the purpose of cosmetics. There are new theories and techniques that involve not just the teeth but the entire facial structure.

While orthodontics is said to deal primarily with adolescents and their dental needs, it also caters to the needs of adults as well. Treatment for adults would involve more care in the part of orthodontists. The tissues of adults are delicate and are not as flexible as that of children.

He says that there has been further study on how combining orthodontics and plastic surgery procedures may be used to reconstruct deformities that have resulted from dental or mouth problems. Every year, about two thirds of cases that orthodontists handle for treatment have something to do with the growth of the jaw. Teeth are often subservient to the jaw. The teeth will usually follow when you put the jaw where it's supposed to be. In the event that restructuring through surgery for the underdeveloped jaw is not possible, corrective appliances may be used so that proper jaw growth is still guided.

People may or may not choose to have orthodontics done, but they should know that it can also be preventive. Improper tongue thrust is something that a thumb sucking child could develop and may make the child have a speech impediment. Teeth can change their positions drastically because of the strength of the tongue.

What makes chinstraps for the mouth a useful corrective measure for malocclusion is its ability to exert upward and downward foces on the lower jaw. A person with a bad bite could eventually encounter bone damage or jaw joint problems. The direct bonding of plastic with metal for braces and the improvement of materials have improved the cosmetic aspect of dental devices. While plastic is preferred because it is aesthetically pleasing, it will not be as effective as metal.

The use of the laminagraph, a new radiography device, is starting to become very common in orthdontics. It not only uses a fraction of radiation required for the conventional full mouth Xray but can also take an X ray of the entire dentofacial region in just one shot. Laminagraphy is useful for doing diagnosis, though it will not take the place of individual X rays in identifying tooth decay.
