An Orthodox Shul (Synagogue) Comes to Philadelphia
The CBH community is vibrant and alive with Jewish activity. In addition to regular daily and Sabbath services, Beth Hamedrosh offers an extensive schedule of learning opportunities for both men and women at all levels of knowledge, from the beginner to the advanced Talmudic scholar, at the synagogue as well as through other community organizations. Of particular note are the many community outreach programs run by synagogue members. The synagogue seeks to reach out to the unaffiliated and those without a religious day school education. It provides a warm, friendly environment to those seeking Jewish identification within the tradition of an Orthodox synagogue.
The community is blessed with an eruv, an enclosure that permits its members to carry necessary items on the Sabbath. Turn this page over for its exact location. The eruv functions in the 21st century to unite the community by permitting families with infants and toddlers to use baby carriages to take their children to services and to others' homes for meals and socializing. It allows the use of wheelchairs, canes and walkers.
Our new campus offers specialized services in addition to the regular complement of three Orthodox services daily. An example of this is our Saturday morning "User Friendly Minyan" service. This prayer service focuses on singing, participatory discussion of Torah topics, camaraderie and teaching those who are seeking more involvement with Judaism to pray as Jews have for thousands of years. The UFM is led by synagogue members who are knowledgeable about Judaism. Many are accomplished professionals who work in Philadelphia's businesses and institutions.
Rabbi Caplan regularly gives classes in Jewish thought that are open to the community. He has taught classes on "Eighteen Ways to Connect to G-d.", kashrut, preparation for Pesach, and more. He hosts a "brunch and learn" at his home featuring coffee, bagels and Torah.
Other scholars in the synagogue offer classes on Gemara and other topics of interest, including women's learning groups.
