Here at First Class Watches, we often get telephone calls asking how our competitors and eBay sites can sell Citizen and Seiko Watches for a fraction of our discounted price. In this article we lay the facts out to why these eBay sellers and websites can knock so much off the retail price to help you avoid getting caught out or being hustled.
For example, one of top sellers the Seiko SNP005P1.
Manufacturer Retail Price: 425
Our Discount Price: £334.95
eBay Price: £250
Seems like a good deal right? Maybe not. Firstly, this particular listing is dispatched from Hong Kong. Alot of Hong Kong sellers don't include postage insurance to further reduce costs, so if the seller does choose to actually send the watch, if it doesn't arrive the sellers blame simply falls on the 'UK Postage System', which leaves you £250 down and no watch.
The watch comes.. GREAT! But hold on, the leather bracelet.. it's not leather? The kinetic (powered by movement) feature is missing and it needs you to insert a battery to get it started. A little bit strange you think. The watch you receive is a knock off, a replica version of what you paid for. If you contact the seller they will most likely direct you to a small print that frees them of blame or quote some other loophole.
The sellers actually send a real SNP005P1, much to your relief. Two years down the line, the movement goes and you go to your local jeweller to arrange a straightforward repair under your Seiko warranty. Sounds simple enough? Not quite. After a conversation with the jeweller, he realises that the warranty you have been given is either not issued from a valid dealer or is an international guarantee which is only one year cover. One again you are left stranded, either with a broken watch or a hefty bill, which takes the £250 price tag almost up to the £425 retail price.
These problems are typical with eBay sellers or other competitors selling the watches for unusually cheap prices. Official stockists can only drop the price at most 15-20%, if the price is any less than this, check who your dealing with, ask them to show you their official stockist status or talk directly to the manufacturer.
Sellers that sell replicas or international watches are called 'Grey Market Sellers'. Unfortunately many people fall prey to these sellers and can often be cheated by their cheap prices. Here at First Class Watches we are committed to selling original watches from all our watch brands. Our retail jewellers can be found listed on the Seiko website (James Moore Jewellers, Kenilworth, UK) as further proof to our authenticity.
