There is just something about collecting model trains. This hobby can be a fun way for kids both young and old to learn about collecting and taking care of their belongings. To get started look into hobby shops in your area. These shops offer huge displays of model train sets and popular accessories. The real appeal is the relationships and contacts that the hobby shop can get you. Other train enthusiasts can let you in on some of the secrets about model train collecting that only they know. They can also offer information on where to find hobby shows and when they will be coming to town. These shows will offer you a chance to get more variety in your model trains collection.

The first thing to do is to determine the kind of model train set you want to build. All types of different track layouts exist and you will have to decide how big or small you want to go. Some people prefer a smaller layout due to space limitations; others will build large and extensive layouts with complicated setups. Your personal style will determine what you want to do but it is very important that you work out a plan of what you want to do before you begin buying. Keep your budget in mind when you make your plans as larger layouts can be very expensive to setup and maintain.

To set your train up on a small scale, just buy enough track. And you can start building from there. If you start out too big you can easily get frustrated. But it is still possible to set your goals in making an immense train set up. One step at a time is the key in doing this. By doing this you will be able to reward yourself along the way and the family will not have to wait long to see your model train sets in action.

Another thing that can add dimension and fun to your model train sets is to decide on a time period you want to recreate with your train set. Perhaps you want to have your train riding through the gold mining towns of the 1800s. Perhaps you would prefer a train rolling through the English countryside of the 1950s. Or maybe you want a modern train, traveling through an immense urban setting such as New York.
