The Importance of Smoke Alarms to Home Fire Safety

There was a standing joke before that if the smoke alarms are triggered, then it is time to eat dinner - or eat out. I know this was sort of true in my case, since fire alarms were often being triggered in my home.

Thankfully, these alarms were not linked to the fire department in my area or I would have had to shoulder a hefty sum due to false alarms. It is a good thing I am a much better cook now since the smoke alarms have not been triggered lately.

Nowadays, when the smoke alarms are triggered, I know there is something seriously wrong and I have to act on it instantly.

There should be a smoke alarm in practically every room in your house. You should constantly assess them for battery power since you do not want them malfunctioning or dead just when a fire breaks out.

Majority of smoke alarms rely on a built in mechanism to signal you when the batteries need to be replaced or recharged. When shopping for smoke alarms, this is a nice feature to look for in the product so you will always be aware when you should change batteries.

There are also smoke alarms that are connected to your home security system. Your monitoring service will be alerted the instant smoke is detected within your home. The service will then try to reach you to determine if a problem exists or if the fire company should be sent over.

If you do answer and there is no problem, the fire company stays put. But if the service fails to reach you, the assumption is that a fire has broken out and the fire company is contacted. This assumption is what stands in the way of the total loss of life and property.

If you have just transferred into a new rental unit, look for smoke alarms inside and be sure you know how to inspect them. The landlord ought to have already set up these alarms, along with placing fire extinguishers in the unit at the same time. Do ask the landlord for smoke alarms if you fail to find any in your rental unit.

For most states, landlords have to install them because they are mandated by law. If there are too few alarms, you could install some more. Do not worry too much about the cost because, after all, what is the price of having piece of mind?
