Personal Security in a world gone mad.

In the news recently we seem to be hearing terrible tales of personal danger on our streets. It seems as if noone is now safe when even an 11 year old can be gunned down in the light of day.So we must all consider some sort of personal protection.
It shocks me to see how our daily lives are being impacted by the constant fear of crime. Just the other day I went round to someones house to collect something and was saddened to see that they felt the need to have a webcam pointing out of their front window, clearly they had either cause to fear attack or break in or they had the neccesity to display some sort of preventative warning measure outside their house to minimise the likelihood of such a personal attack. This is just an isolated sympton of a malaise which pervades every area of society and threatens to destroy the free and democratic lifestyle to which we have become accusotmed. Many people consider terrorism, as the greatest threat to society, but it appears that it is the enemy within which threatens to be the cancer which rots us at the core. We are unable to allow our children to play out in the street. A generation ago, rather than sitting intensely in front of computer/ console screens our children ( I was one of them ) charged around the street playing football and other games, this sadly is no longer possible. There are many other small things we take for granted now, which have insidiously affected our freedon of choice: we remove our car stereos when we park our car; we leave lights on when we go out; we hide ( yes hide ) our phones and favourite belongings lest an opportinist mugger see fit to remove them from our posession; what shall we do to stop this saddening epidemic.
The bard asked whether ( I will reword this part for ease of reading ) it was better to just put up with a nasty thing or to get all worked up and face it, head on . Unfortunately is is not feasible for us to become vigilantes, nor to go around trying to clean up the tidal waves of crime from our streets, so the only way in which we can remove the likelihood that we become victims of crime is, indeed, to take precautionary and preventative measures.
The first, and most important area of personal concern is that of personal safety. Many Police forces and the government recommend the use of personal alarms . These are small hand held devices which can be carried in either pocket of handbag and will act as a deterrent ( emitting a piercing shrill ) against personal attack. They come in various models, all of which will raise your confidence and help in a nasty situation.
Home security can be vastly increased by the use of suitable home security systems these can take the form of burglar alarms, security door latches, timer lights and window locks.
It is sadly, and that is how I feel at the necessity to take these measures, a good idea to look into protecting one's family and posessions from the threats that are posed. It should make you feel safer and more secure.
In the meanwhile let us all try to improve society and remove the festering conditions which breed such menaces.
