The paint left over in the bottom of the can, should be used for touch ups and odd jobs as much as possible. Give your walls an extra coating that will help your paint job last longer.

However, you can't use left over paint for very long. It has a shelf life, and you can't use it beyond that. Remember that it is illegal to pour paint down the drain. If you feel that you can't use up all the leftover paint, consider donating it to your local school, or club. This way, someone else can use it for a good purpose, and you're helping out your community as well.

Ensure that you don't pour liquid paint into the garbage can. Nor must you pour oil based paints into the ground. Your town probably has a center for hazardous waste disposal. This is the proper place to dispose of unwanted solvents, and paint. Ensure that you keep the paint in their original canisters, and tightly seal them before you drop them off at such a location.

The liquid portion of Latex based paints can be safely disposed of into the drainage system. This is another reason to favor latex and water based paints over oil based ones. If you have rags with paint on them, ensure that you dry them thoroughly before disposing of them in the waste.

Store leftover solvents and thinners in a jar for a while to allow the solid portions to settle down. You can then pour off the liquid , and reuse it. The solid portion needs to be dumped in a safe disposal area.
