The history of the book is the story of industrial innovation that improved the quality of paper, access to the information, portability, and the cost of production. In ancient time writing was done on dry plant leaves, silk, metals etc. Like in China Silk was a base for writing. Writing was done with the help of brush made up of plant's stems. In Ancient India, dried palm tree leaves were used as a base for paper. Any bits and pieces which will grasp and pass on text is a contender for books.

Several historical records show that a person named named Ts'ai Lun (from China) is accredited with inventing paper during the early 2nd century. By 12th century, paper-making reached to Europe. Around 1440, Johannes Gutenberg, a German, invented the printing press and symbols the entry of the books into the industrialized age. Books and other vital credentials could now be reproducing speedily.

Modern day's books now come with International Standard Book Number (ISBN) number with barcode which is unique to every edition of every book produced by participating publishers, world wide. An ISBN has four parts: the first part is the country code, the second the publisher code and the third the title code. The last part is a check digit, and can take values from 0-9 and X (10).
