Social networking online is one of today's most popular trends. Many however wonder how social networking can help their careers or business and exactly how to get started with this online marketing technique.

The internet has taken networking to a level that traditional networking never could. The net expands an individuals reach and exposure beyond their local area. Where traditionally people gather in person to network the internet affords people to gain an unlimited reach to geographic areas like never before. A person can interact every day from any location in the world.

Internet networking is not much different than the traditional method of meeting people you have something in common with. In network marketing and socializing you meet people and get to know them by sharing inform about yourself and in turn they do the same. You can add friends to your network every day and send messages and bulletins to them. Eventually you will have a large group of friends to share stories and personal experiences with. Throughout this process you will meet people who may join your business or opportunity or purchase your product.


When creating your profile and homepage you will need to consider your goals and what you want to achieve. Do you want to promote your business? Do you want to find new friends in you geographical area? Are you looking for freelance work? Do you want to contact potential prospects? Be mindful that some people only want contact with others who want to be friends and don't want to do business. Others will be open to hearing about your business. Either way, be yourself and genuine and they will do the same.

My Space (myspace.com): This is the mother of social networking sites. Originally dominated by teens, the 20 to 60 age groups are becoming more prominent every. It may be worth your while to spend some time there to see if your target groups network there too.

LinkedIn (linkedin.com): LinkedIn is excellent for professional, career-related online marketing because it focuses exclusively on business and professional networking. You will find interfaces to connect with classmates or colleagues (both past and present); find service providers or clients; post or find a job; and ask or answer business-related questions.

Gather (gather.com): This network incorporates user publications (in the form of articles) and a points reward system into the usual social networking activities.

Every social networking site has it's own type membership "style". Spend time on each one and find the sits(s) that fits your goals best. Check out the groups, popularity and mix of people of each and this will help you make a decision. Make sure that whatever site you join that you do it subtlety, don't push yourself or your business on people and they will be more receptive.

There are many types of contacts you may think about networking with. You may find customers, net workers in the same industry as you, publishers of ezines you may wish to mention in, company representatives who are in business that may support your industry.

A few people will find you based on your profile, but you will want to actively seek out quality friends. You can start to find friends by joining groups related to your expertise, that have members who match your target friend profile or interest you in general. You can also approach individuals and ask them to become a friend and/or part of your network.
