The most unique thing about the Kyocera Mita FS-1030D / FS-1030dn is its ECOSYS "Cartridge free" printing system. Though the ECOSYS long life consumables are essentially the same thing as print cartridges, they utilize a system that reduces cost per print by using a very efficient toner system that brings ink prices down to half that of other laser printers.
On top of a low total cost of ownership, the Kyocera Mita FS-1030D / FS-1030dn printers have good overall statistics for desktop printers, including a print time of 23 pages per minute. Unique features include a KM-NET viewer for simple remote monitoring of printing processes, and a universal KX driver for easy network integration of the FS-1030dn model (the Kyocera Mita FS-1030D model does not include a network card).
A 266 MHz CPU helps to keep print processes moving along at an optimal level, which includes a first print time of only 10 seconds. The standard and Ethernet ready versions of the model both share the incorporation of a standard USB port and Parallel port as well for single host PC setups. 32 MBs of built in RAM should serve as plenty for those printing exclusively in black and white text, but those wishing to include monochrome imagery or mixed text and graphics may wish to upgrade the memory, as the device is expandable to a total of 288 MBs.
Paper handling abilities come in the form of a standard 250 sheet drawer that can load letter or legal sized paper, and a 50 sheet multipurpose bypass tray that can be used to conveniently load various media types without having to unload primary paper sources. Special media types compatible with the unit include transparencies, card stock, custom letterhead, and index cards. A built in duplexor is also standard with the two units, and can be a lifesaver when paper costs are through the roof. When additional paper storage is required, a second 250 sheet tray can be added for an additional cost, and can help businesses who frequently switch back and fourth between two paper sizes. Special media types are not compatible with the duplexor.
The printer's maximum monthly duty cycle of 25,000 pages means that a fairly good amount of volume can come out of the machine, and it could easily suit a small office network with reasonable printing demands. It also comes in a very reasonable package size, with dimensions of 14.9 in. x 14.8 in. x 9.3 in. (W x D x H). It weighs a hefty little 23.2 pounds, which can be explained by the inclusion of the duplexing hardware.
The Kyocera Mita FS-1030D / FS-1030dn offers unique print resolution options including a 1200 dot per inch mode that is created with true 1800 x 600 dots per inch, and a 2400 x 600 dot per inch mode with KIR. If overall cost of ownership is a priority, the ECOSYS high yield toner system is a great investment, and can help cut costs over the life of the printer.
