New Years Resolutions Are DEAD! Or are they?

Today is the 29th of December as I write this, so in a couple days time we will all farewell 2006.

Personally for me, I won't be sorry.

It's been something of a shocker year for us. A fair bit of pain, stretching, and some great things as well of course, for which we're very thankful!

So I'm looking forward to 2007.

I'm full of plans, ideas, and enthusiasm for what the year will hold. And I'm purposely making the time to let my tired brain percolate and meditate on some of these ideas, so I can fill myself up with inspiration for next year!

But there's one thing I'm certainly NOT doing…

… that's making any of those New Years Resolution things!

Yuk!

I hate them with a passion.

They suck! But they are pervasive - they are the topic of newspaper reports, gossip magazines, party conversations… they even dominate the conversation around the Australian icon - the Barbie ! (Ozzie for a Barbecue!)

But you should see what I found out! Google Trends shows some very decisive data about the search patterns of people for the term "goal setting". And the few weeks around New Years time figures very strongly in that data!

You can see a picture of what I found on my blog link below. It's very interesting!

You can see on the graph WHY New Years Resolutions DON'T work.

Here's the big SECRET that most people don't know about New Years Resolutions:

Unless you implement a system, a habit, or some kind of reasonably permanent lifestyle to thought-life change, your resolutions certainly won't stick!

See there's a mechanism inside the brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). You know when you buy a new car, and all of a sudden, you notice heaps of cars of the same model or make?! That's the RAS doing it's job. It's function is to actively bring to your attention from your peripheral consciousness, the things you are thinking about, focusing on, and interested in!

How cool is that!

But within this little gem of information, is the reason most of the "New Years Resolution brigade" fail miserably!

They crash and burn, because there's no mechanism to consistently bring the desired goals, habits, or characteristics into being.

So after a few days, weeks or months, they give up, and quietly forget about it, until next year!

But there is a better way.

Check out the Google Trends graph on my blog link below and you'll find out what DOES work!
