There is an overpopulation of pets in our country, as demonstrated by local animal shelters and humane societies that are over run with primarily dogs and cats in need a safe and loving home. According to various online sources, millions of young, healthy, beautiful companion animals are euthanized needlessly each year primarily due to overpopulation. There are simply too many pets and not enough homes; a significant percentage of dogs for adoption in animal shelters are purebred too. This is why it is so important to support local humane societies and animal shelters. Adopt a pet and save a pet's life. Many of these animals are just victims of circumstance; their owners may not be able to care for them anymore, or they may have a change in living arrangements where a pet is not allowed. For whatever reason the animal ended up in the shelter, they deserve to be in a loving, safe environment.

Rescue organizations and dedicated volunteers routinely search animal shelters for puppies, kittens, and dogs and cats of all ages whose time is about to run out, and give them a second chance before they are euthanized. These rescuers use a network of foster families who keep these pets in their own homes, assess their personalities, and then carefully screen potential families who want to adopt a pet. Whatever is in the best interest of the animal is the most important deciding factor when placing an animal in a new home, to make sure the pet ends up in the right home with proper care. The rescue organization also follows up to make sure everything is going smoothly with the new addition to the family, complete with training tips and advice. Most will also take the pet back if it doesn't work out for some reason or another.

You can adopt a pet dog or cat from animal welfare organizations across the country. Just visit any number of online animal shelters dedicated to providing animal health and safety information, and to saving the lives of homeless shelter animals, like www.petfinder.com or www.adoptapet.com, which also features a worldwide directory of animal shelters, lost pet forum, animal funnies, adoption counseling, and pet disaster relief information. Help unite these beautiful companion animals with loving families. Adopt a pet, don't breed or buy while shelter animals die needlessly every day. Save a pet's life and give them the home they deserve.
