One of the first things that people need to understand when starting on a journey of self improvement is how to overcome a few basic emotions. Imagine that a new opportunity has arrived at your door; it seems like a major opportunity, a new break, something that you have always wanted to do, no matter how big or small, this is what you have been waiting for. It could even be something that you're dreaming about; you know that this is the direction that you really want to go but something is stopping you. So what is it?

The usual "gremlins" that kick in are those conversations that you have with yourself. Where does this voice come from, who is it that is questioning your ability to be you?

This is your conscious mind or if you like "The Captain of the Ship". You unconscious mind therefore represents the "Crew". The crew will carry on regardless doing what they have always done and following instructions from the voice at the helm. They have unlimited potential because whatever you tell them to do it will happen. The results could of course vary depending on the experience of the crew, but just imagine what could be achieved if you opened yourself up to more opportunities and choices and then your unconscious mind which has the capacity for far greater retention an action than you would ever expect, obeyed the Captains positive instructions.

Your unconscious mind is the one that controls your breathing and your heartbeat, it also programmes your ability to tie your shoelaces and drive you to work, and these are things that happen in a way we refer to as "second nature". Clearly the responsibility is huge and the capability to achieve more is immense.

The conscious mind on the other hand has been trained well; unfortunately it has often been given too many negative thoughts and limiting beliefs which lead to the behaviours that in turn produce the results you're achieving today . It has been fed information that has lead it too create boundaries and these boundaries prevent you from crossing over into new territory where the answers to your dreams may lie.
One of the emotions that play a part in holding back your progress is; Worry. Take this opportunity to decide for yourself if you believe things can be this simple. If you choose to believe they can you will also start to make amazing progress in the initial phases of your self improvement plan. The choice is yours;

Worry - I wonder who worked with you to create your worry strategy. Was it your parents or your teachers? Your friends or watching too much TV? There can be so many things that have helped you to learn how to worry. Have a look at this for a new strategy because there are only five things that you really can worry about;

• Yourself - If this is the case you will know better than anyone else why you're worried. So be specific about what is causing the problem and then create the actions you need to take to stop it. As an example; if your career or work is causing you major grief what can you do to improve it? Create a list and then choose which are your best options right now and then go for it!

• Other people - Why would you do this? Will your worrying help them? You may be better showing them you're concerned or providing them with any support that they have asked for but worrying will not normally solve any problems. Always choose to keep out of any business that is no concern of yours.

• The past - If you're worried about the past then it's too late. Accept it happened and move on, nothing will change it and as long as you have taken the learning's from it you really will be best forgetting it!

• The future - It hasn't happened yet which means you can create it. So no worries there then.

• The present - The great thing about this one is that as soon as you have worried about it, it is in the past! So go back to the statement above which says it's already too late!

In the initial stages of my self improvement training this information proved to be very important and I chose to not only believe I could change but I also created some really strong actions that would allow me to start making the progress that I clearly needed to support my future plans. I hope you do too.
