A handheld GPS (aka Global Positioning System) is defined as a fully functioning navigation system that is powered by the use of satellites. A constellation of over 24 global positioning system satellites is responsible for broadcasting precise timing signals, with the use of radios, to GPS receivers. This process is what allows them to accurately ascertain their location in any weather condition and at any time of the day or night.

Handheld GPS units are valuable in many ways, including in air, sea and land transportation. They are also widely used for creating maps and land surveys. In addition, handheld GPS is used by mountain bikers and/or hikers who want to keep an accurate assessment of their location.

A GPS tracking system can also be used to locate an automobile, which is similar to the OnStar service that is available in many new automobiles. The recorded data, which is stored within the tracking unit, can be transmitted to a specific location. This allows for real-time reporting and faster response times for emergency situations. A GPS tracking system can also be used to locate a person or pet. There are an increasing number of furry little friends who have tracking chips placed just beneath their skin's surface. This tracking system allows their owner to track and locate their pet should it ever become lost or injured and not be able to find it's way home.

A handheld GPS unit is especially valuable to motorists, who wish to know their exact location. Frequent travelers who are always visiting new cities may find this technology useful in helping to prevent them from becoming lost. Automobile navigation systems, which are built into the automobile, can often provide detailed directions to certain points of interest. In addition, they may also provide accurate arrival times and distances traveled readings.

Who uses handheld GPS? The answer is simple as individuals in walks of life, careers and locations use handheld GPS. This includes traveling salesmen, business executives who are frequently traveling to meetings, the soccer mom who wants to make sure she knows how to get her star to the next big game and the college student who is just adjusting to a new city.

With technology continuing to grow, the world of handled GPS plans to grow even more than it has thus far. Who knows what the future holds for the global positioning system, but one thing is for sure when it comes to technology. The only thing that is certain is that anything is possible.
