Facing the Martial Art of Life

Since I earned the rank of Shodan, 1st degree black belt in kenpo karate, I've been a busy guy.

Not on the mat, mind you, but in my life, to which I immediately turned my attention after being promoted. I felt it was time to leave the training hall, that there wasn't anything left to learn, and in fact that continuing on the path I had walked for so long was actually getting in the way of further growth and development.

Though it caused no little wonderment in my instructors and juniors, this move is the logical consequence of reaching Shodan, as I see it.

After eight arduous years, countless injuries, scrapes, bruises, and instances of blood-letting, I felt it was time to test my toughness in the world.

Though I felt very competent physically, it was another question entirely whether my hard earned laurels would do me any good in the world beyond the dojo's door.

Was I capable of turning the page on several interpersonal relationships that needed attention and resolution?

Yes, as it turned out, but only after a lot of gut wrenching interactions and ultra-serious decisions.

Could I start saying "yes" to the many invitations I receive to speak in countries where the security for Americans is highly suspect, if not non-existent?

Yes, again, and my self-defense skills and tough mindset came in handy, I'll tell you, especially in one city renowned as the murder capital of the world.

If you feel you're peaking in your dojo skills, maybe it's time to take them outdoors into the bright sunshine and the dark alleys of reality.

You'll find plenty of doubts and fears to conquer.
