Parents and medical practitioners alike have been embarking on a new journey with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) - treating autism with vitamins and supplements. Research has proven that vitamins and nutritional supplementation can bring forth dramatic changes in the lives of children with autism.

How is it possible to manage autism with supplements alone? It has been found that many children with autism have certain nutritional deficiencies. It is also a long-known fact in medicine that vitamin deficiencies can cause or worsen medical as well as neurological problems. Many autistics have low levels of vitamin B6, vitamins A and D, low levels of vitamin B12, folate, zinc, low vitamins B1, B3 and B5 function, low levels of the amino acid methionine, and low levels of EFAs (essential fatty acids). Many of them are also deficient in digestive enzymes that results to inadequate absorption of nutrients from food and poor digestion.

To add to that, many (if not most) children with autism are extremely picky eaters that they limit the variety of foods they eat, causing more nutrient deficiencies and enhancing the need for proper supplementation.

Supplementation with B Vitamins

The B vitamins are essential in maintaining healthy nerve function and for muscle tone. A combination of the B6 vitamin and magnesium has been found to be helpful in improving brain function in autistic children. B6 and magnesium have a calming effect on the child and can lead to increased eye contact, fewer tantrums, improved speech and a relatively more normal behavior.

Supplementation with Vitamin D

Vitamin D is very important for proper development of the brain. It is also a powerful antioxidant and assists in the absorption of calcium. Vitamin D is also helpful in increasing the levels of glutathione, which is essential for detoxification.

Supplementation with Vitamins A, C and E.

Vitamins A, C and E can help promote healthy immune system. Supplementation with these vitamins is necessary to respond to the oxidative stress and immune function impairment that many autistic children experience. Vitamins C and E are also potent antioxidants that fight off free radicals and protect the brain cells from oxidative risks.

Supplementation with Minerals

Minerals such as zinc, calcium, selenium, and molybdenum (and magnesium, as previously mentioned) are also important for optimum body functioning, proper brain development, and for a healthier, stronger body.

Supplementation with essential fatty acids (omega 3 fish oils)

Research studies have shown that essential fatty acids, especially omega 3 fatty acids richly found in fish oil, are beneficial for children with autism and attention deficit problems. These essential fatty acids in fish oil are important for normal brain development and functioning. In autistic children, omega 3 fatty acids are clinically proven to help improve behavior.

A Note to Parents about Treating Autism with Vitamins and Supplements

If you are among the many parents who feel helpless about how to help their autistic children, why not start with vitamin supplementation? Adding a supplement or two to your child's daily diet can work wonders, but remember that vitamins in high doses can be harmful to your child's health. Consult with your doctor regarding proper supplementation of your child with autism.
