Retractable awnings are sub-divided into two categories, which are manually operated and automatic or motor operated awnings. For both categories, the assembly and fixing of the retractable awning has to be done manually and is of a more or less permanent nature. However, manual type awnings are extended and retracted by means of a hand wheel attached to a gear mechanism. On the other hand, motorized awnings are extended and retracted with the help of an electric motor.

Manually operated retractable awnings are suitable to cover small to medium sized patios and decks. Motorized retractable awnings are used for large patios or backyards. All retractable awnings, manual or motorized, are mostly supported by lightweight Aluminum or galvanized iron frame. Motorized awnings are also available with metal slat roofs and have a much longer lifespan compared to the ones with fabric roofs.

Motorized awnings are expensive but convenient products popular with old or affluent people who wish to quickly and effortlessly extend or retract the roof. Further, the motor can be either remote controlled or controlled by a three-way switch attached to the motor by cable. Cable controlled awnings can be operated from inside the house or from either side of the awning. They are generally used to cover larger open areas, like patios, terraces or courtyards, on a temporary basis. They are a terrific way to block sun and rain on a patio or deck without having to permanently alter the building structure or erect obstructive support poles.

Motorized awnings can be ordered to fit any particular length and width combination of nearly any patio or deck. There are numerous manufacturers and retailers of retractable awnings, who sell the awnings through shops as well as through Internet. Most large retailers of deck and patio furniture sell them and also provide installation services on request.
